About Me: My
name is Jair Claudio Pina Mendes and I was born in Sao Vicente,
one of ten Islands which make up Cape Verde, an archipelago
off the West Coast of Africa. I left Cape Verde when I was
only five years old to join my parents here in America,
which had already settled into the Dorchester area of Boston,
MA.
Here in Boston I got enrolled into the Boston Public School
system and participated in many after school programs throughout
my middle and high school years. I was a part of the JFK
Leadership Program while in middle school over at the JFK
Library. In this program we volunteered in many places and
tried to better out communities. I was also part of the
Urban Scholars program at UMASS Boston while in High School.
It was through Urban Scholars that I was able to enroll
in credited college courses to help me gain a better chance
of getting into a prominent college. I also participated
in other enrichment classes offered by the program throughout
the academic years.
It was during my high school years at the Jeremiah E. Burke
High School that really helped me get into computers. The
Burke was a technology magnet school and I took all computer
courses that were available. Some of the areas I excelled
in were webmaster (web design), A+ (computer repair), and
graphic design. Away from school I was glued to my computer
desk always practicing my graphic/web designing abilities
and not to mention my ability to take apart computers and
put them back together.
My education and work experiences landed me in Boston College
where I changed my major a few times until I settled with
communications. I was unsure of exactly what I wanted to
do but communications seemed like a right fit. I was that
kid at college that everyone came to when they had their
computer problems or needed some help to make their presentations
stand out. I should have been charging but I was always
too eager to help out. I’m just that type of person.
Boston College really instilled the whole Jesuit persona
into me and I am proud of the person that I am today.
Today I am a very tech savvy individual that enjoys reading
the latest tech blogs (engadget, neowin, gigaom, techcrunch,
etc.) and constantly browsing the web for the latest Photoshop
tutorials. I really enjoy the whole creative process but
my strong points are in production. I have a moderate level
of experience with web elements such as flash, html and
css. I am very familiar with Photoshop, Fireworks, Dreamweaver,
Homesite, and the Microsoft Office Suite. I prefer a PC
over a MAC.
During me leisure time I make sure to get in some Halo
sessions on Xbox Live with my friends back from high school
and college. It’s always fun to just play a game or
two with buddies that you don’t get to see everyday.
The world is a very busy place where you don’t have
the time to constantly stay in touch with all your friends.
Currently I can be found in the Fitchburg, MA area where
I purchased a two family home back in July of 2007.
